Have you heard of mesothelioma? Well, it is a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibers and is very frequent in the elderly men. Mesothelioma affects the membrane of internal organs such as the lungs and the heart and is often very difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are often similar to many of the other common diseases. There are two types of mesothelioma:

  • Pleural Mesothelioma

This has come to be known as the most common type of mesothelioma and for this, is accountable for over seventy percent of all cases of mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma affects mostly the lungs lining and is known through its symptoms such as coughing, chest pain, difficulty in breathing and swallowing, weight loss, wheezing and short breaths.

  •  Peritoneal Mesothelioma

This type of mesothelioma is not as common as the pleural mesothelioma and it is cancer affecting the abdomen linings. The tissues of the abdomen affected by this cancer are called the peritoneum and is known to account for at least twenty percent of the cases. The most common symptoms of this type of mesothelioma are abdominal pains, appetite loss, weight loss, nausea and general weakness of the body.

In the two types of mesothelioma, the symptoms often become more aggressive and severe over time and the earlier the diagnosis is done the better it will be for the one suffering from mesothelioma.
